Ice Climbing in Leavenworth: Left Hubba Hubba (WI3R)

I was supposed to be out the first Wednesday in January getting my ice climbing skills fine tuned by Marten Volken at one of Pro Guide’s great ice climbing classes. But due to far too many hours of rain, yes that’s RAIN, at Snoqualmie Pass, my class was postponed. Luckily, Leavenworth was still looking pretty for the weekend. The ice was in and I was itching to swing some tools. Jeremy and I headed out along Icicle Creek Road to check out Hubba Hubba.

The falls are about 30-45 minutes straight up the hill (that’s a very steep hill) from the parking area.  Hubba Hubba is a fav among Washington climbers and as we suspected it was very picked out – you could’ve fist jammed the first portion of the climb.  Nixing Hubba Hubba, we turned our sights to a seemingly pristine climb to the left of Hubba Hubba (which as the Washington Guide to Ice Climbing later informed us, is called Left Hubba Hubba and is classed as WI3R).

The first pitch was a mellow, rambly WI2.  There was a small break in the climb where the belay was set up for the second pitch.  The second pitch was WI3.  A little steeper ice than the WI2 followed by a short vertical section, then some steeper yet not vertical ice and finally, to add a little spiciness to the climb, a section of snice covered slabs.  Note to self: bring a cam or two on future multi-pitch ice climbs, you never know what you are going to run into.  Jeremy rocked the leading and we got over the snice (for those who are wondering that’s snow and ice mixed) covered slab sections with no problems.  At the top of the climb was a large tree that we rapped off of for one pitch, then built a v-thread partway down and rapped off that to the bottom.
