Playground Point Crag in Leavenworth

We woke Sunday bright and early to rain, lots and lots of rain.  Summer’s over.  Not that it has really begun in Seattle.  Ashlie, Peter and I did what climber’s do when it’s raining – head to town for some wine tasting and chocolate devouring.

About mid-day the rain broke, we grabbed our climbing gear and determinedly headed out to the crag to get in some rock play time.  We headed toward a new crag called Playground Point, located mile 5 along Icicle Creek road.  The path up to the crag is just around the corner from the mile 5 marker, it’s a very obvious trail.  It took about 15 minutes to get to Playground Point from the road.

We warmed up on a 5 – called Hopscotch.  It’s a fun lead, the middle section gets a pretty slabby but overall it’s a great warm-up climb.

Then it was on to climb something harder and spicier.  I rolled up my sleeves and got to work on Romper Room, a 5.8+.  It’s a very fun climb.  At the lip is probably the crux move with an easier path to a little right of the bolts, then it gets a little slabby up top.

Playground Point is a great spot for beginners of rock climbing in general, beginning leading sport and beginning leading trad.  The climbs range from 5- to 5.10 with more though around the 5.6-5.8 range.  There are a number of pure sport routes, with some trad/sport mix and trad routes mixed in.  Also, all the climbs are top-ropeable

It’s always great to have a professional photographer along on the climb. Peter took some incredible photos of me climbing and I thought I’d post a few of them here. For more check out his work: http://www.peterwestcarey.com/ or his blog: The Carey Adventures.
